Having earned points in just two of their first five games, the Storm were hoping their two home games this weekend would act as a springboard towards turning around their slow start. With a win and a shoot out loss, time will tell how the Storm react to a fairly successful weekend.

Friday night saw the Storm deserve a better fate than they got. After a mediocre start to the game, the Storm dominated the final two periods and most of overtime, only to lose 3-2 in a shoot out. Chad Berglund and Dylan Hubbs gave the Grizzlys two seperate one goal leads, only to see Storm forward John Girman tie the game both times. Berglund's goal came on a power play a minute and a half into the game, with Girman tying it 7 minutes later. Hubbs scored almost five minutes into the second, with Girman tying the game again with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.
The Storm out-shot the Grizzlys 17-10 in the third period and overtime, with at least half of those shots being excellent scoring opportunities. But outside of Girman's goal-mouth scramble goal in the third, they were unable to get anything else behind Grizzlys goalie Brandon Thiessen, who made 36 saves on the night.
In the shoot-out, the Grizzlys were able to prevail, even without the services of arguably their two best forwards in Berglund and Nicholas Bourgeois, who both picked up minors and 10-minute misconducts at the end of overtime, making them inelligible for the shoot-out.

On Saturday, the struggling storm offence finally came to life, scoring three times in a 1:41 span in the second period, and firing five overall en route to the win. After Luke Challier opened the scoring for Camrose, Jeff Clark (who celebrated his 18th birthday on Saturday), Mitch Neumeier and Jordan Forfar rattled off the quick fire attack for the Storm. The Kodiaks would not get closer than a goal the rest of the night, as the teams traded goals the remainder of the way, with Cole Wilson, Luc Vandale and Ben Gallacher scoring for the Kodiaks, sandwiching Storm goals off the sticks of Darren Kramer (on a powerplay) and Cam McWilliam.

Ryan Hamberg made quite the debut in Storm silks, laying out Clayton Jardine with a huge hit at the Camrose blueline about seven and a half minutes into the game, and then immediately being challenged by Luke Challier (surprisingly, there was no instigator call against Challier).

Two Deals Bring Two Newcomers to Storm

Ryan Hamberg and Lyndin Himer-Lewis are the newest members of the Blue and Gold

The Storm have brought in two new players through a pair of deals. One made his debut last night, while the other is expected to dress tonight against the Camrose Kodiaks.
The first deal saw the hockey club acquire the rights to local product Lyndin Himer-Lewis from Drayton Valley for future cnsiderations. Himer-Lewis led the Ernie's Sports Experts Major Midget Storm in scoring last season, and was the club's representative in the AMHL all star game, where he recorded a hat trick and an assist, en route to being named player of the game for the North Division squad. He also appeared in five games with the Thunder as an affiliate player last season.
The second transaction was a three team trade involving the Storm and two teams from Ontario. It started with the Storm dealing 20 year old blueliner Nick Yeatman to the Orangeville Flyers of the OJHL for Jonathan Demme, who was then subsequently shipped to the Villanove Knights of the same league, in exchange for Hamberg.
In 78 games over two seasons with the Knights, Hamberg had a goal and 10 assists to go with 188 penalty minutes.
At 6 foot 3 and 205 pounds, the soon to be 19 year old Hamberg brings more size to the Storm back end. Coach Mike Vandekamp hopes he will turn into a Mark Stojan-style defender for the Storm, as in someone who will block shots and kill penalties while playing a top-4 role on the team.

Fritz To Get Another Shot At Canada West

Tanner Fritz hopes to wear the Maple Leaf for a third straight year.

In the brief history of the World Junior A Hockey Challenge, no player has ever represented Canada West in three straight tournaments. Tanner Fritz hopes to change that this year.
The Storm forward, who won a silver medal in Camrose in 2008 and in Summerside in 2009, is one of 11 AJHL players, and one of two Grande Prairie residents invited to this year's Canada West Evaluation Camp in Penticton, BC, who are also the host of this year's WJAHC.
Fritz leads the Storm with two goals and four points through the club's first five games this season. Last year, he was an assistant captain with Canada West, who fell to the United States in the gold medal game. In fact, he is one of 10 players from last year's squad that are back, hoping to seek redemption this year.

Another player hoping to improve on that silver performance of last year is fellow Grande Prairie native and Quesnel Millionaires netminder Kirby Halcrow, who served as the backup to Sean Bonar on last year's Canada West squad. The fact that they were on last year's team should help both Halcrow and especially Fritz, who as mentioned is hoping to make the squad for a record third straight year. Acting as a negative though is that they are 2 of 11 players in camp that were born in 1991. Clubs competing in the tournament are allowed a maximum of 6 - 19 year olds (1991 born) on their team. Four of the 11 1991 born kids in camp were on last year's silver medal winning squad.

Grande Prairie native Kirby Halcrow is trying to make Canada West for a second straight year

The camp goes September 27th and 28th in Penticton, which means Fritz will miss the Storm's September 28th contest in Drayton Valley. He should be back though in time for Showcase weekend in Spruce Grove a couple of days later.
Other AJHL players invited to the camp include 5 Camrose Kodiaks (Craig Bokenfohr, Ben Gallacher, Sam and Clayton Jardine and Nolan Kaiser) and one each from Fort McMurray (Carson Cooper), Okotoks (Rhett Holland), Calgary Mustangs (John Lidgett), St Albert (Reed Linaker) and Calgary Canucks (John Baird). Canmore Eagles coach Andrew Milne is one of the assistants on the squad.
Besides the AJHL, the team will be made up of players from the BCHL, SJHL, MJHL, and SIJHL.

Storm - 1 at Oil Barons - 2

After a scathing video session on Thursday night in which reportedly very few players were left unscathed for their performance in Wednesday's loss in Sherwood Park, there was some curiousity as to how the Storm would react Friday night in Fort McMurray.

For two periods, they looked pretty good, as the Storm put in one of their best overall performances of the year. But the gas tank looked to empty in the third period, as the Oil Barons out shot them 14-2 in the final frame, and got the game winning goal almost 7 minutes into the frame en route to a 2-1 win.

Dustin Beairsto opened the scoring for the Storm with 1:23 left in the first, after Cam McWilliam made a nice chip out of the defensive zone right to the speedy Spruce Grove native. Beairsto then beat an Oil Baron defender to the outside and out waited Jesse Kallechy before putting it glove side into the goal.

Oil Barons tied it early in the second as league scoring leader Mitchell Board beat Storm netminder Jacob Edwards right off the faceoff. Board would also be involved in the game winning goal, as he bit Caylen Walls outside on a one-on-one battle, firing a shot the Edwards could not completely squeeze. The loose puck would sit in the crease until Markus Gerbrandt could poke it into the open goal.

The Oil Barons would then turn it over to their forecheck, who kept the Storm pinned in their half of the rink for most of the final few minutes of the game, not allowing them the chance to get a final press on Kallechy in the final seconds.

The teams will meet again tonight at 8 at the Casman Center in Fort McMurray, in the final game of this three game road swing for the Storm.

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

Jacob Edwards looked very solid in his debut for the Storm, making 35 saves, including 13 in the third period which kept the Storm in the game when they had trouble generating offence.

It was by far the most physical game of the season for the Storm, as they were on both the giving and receiving end. John Girman was very physical, laying out Ben Lake with a thunderous hit late in the first period, then handling himself very well after being jumped by Oil Baron Drew McLaughlin. How McLaughlin did not receive an instigator penalty on the play still baffles me.

Storm - 2 at Crusaders - 4

For the second time in as many meetings this season, the Sherwood Park Crusaders came out on top of the Storm in a game dominated by special teams play. The two teams combined for 17 power plays on the night, with the Crusaders going 2 for 9, while the Storm went 1 for 8 while adding a shorthanded goal.

The Storm dug themselves an early hole that they were never fully able to dig out of. Despite out shooting the Crusaders 8-2 at one point in the first period, the Storm found themselves down 2-0 on the scoreboard, thanks to a goal 44 seconds in by Cody Irving, and a 5 on 3 power play goal by Peter Quenneville that deflected off of a Storm defender and behind Lino Chimienti, who was making his first regular season start for the Storm. The teams traded goals in the second, with Tanner Fritz scoring shorthanded and Spencer Mault on the power play for the Storm, while Jesse Koch had both Crusader goals.

RANDOM THOUGHTS:
The Storm had to play the final two periods of the game without assistant captain Caylen Walls, who was thrown out of the game late in the first period after picking up a checking from behind penalty. It was the second straight game that the Lyalta native had gotten an early taste of the showers, an issue that did not impress coach Mike Vandekamp, who claims he needs the veteran to stay in the game to help with his young blueline.

Rookie Daniel Dale hamdled himself very well in his first junior hockey fight. After being jumped by Crusaders rookie JC Heck in the second period, Dale quickly recovered and landed several good shots to the slightly larger Sherwood Park forward.

I will not question that Patrick Terriss is a good goaltender. But I do question some of his actions on the ice. The second anyone from the opposition is anywhere near him, he is flopping around and acting as if he has been shot. As well, the way he showboated after the win right in the face of Storm captain Darren Kramer could come back to haunt him before the season is out. Junior hockey players have long memories, and actions like those of the Crusader goaltender after the game last night should serve as motivation to Storm forwards in future meetings.

Vandekamp on goalies and the Crusaders

There have been changes to the Storm's goaltending situation over the past few days. I caught up with coach Mike Vandekamp Tuesday afternoon to get an update, and to also preview Wednesday's kick off to the three game in four night road trip in Sherwood Park.

There have been further updates since this interview was done. Tuesday night, the club announced it had released 18 year olf netminder Chase Komistek, who had previously played with the Calgary Canucks and Brooks Bandits, as well as the WHL's Calgary Hitmen. They also announced that they had finally received Lino Chimienti's release from Quebec, and that the 19 year old had finally been cleared to play. He will likely see action at some point during this current road trip. Chimienti and Edwards are joined by Thunder Bay, Ontario native Colin Dzijacky on the roster. Dzijacky is 1-1 on the season with a 1.93 goals against average, and a .930 save percentage.

The Storm have found their way into the win column for the first time in the 2010-11 season. But they did it the hard way.

After dominating for most the final two periods, the Storm gave up a goal with 32.9 seconds remaining in the third period, and then needed two goals in the shoot out to defeat Drumheller 3-2.
The only period that the Storm seemed to struggle in was the first period, as they came out of the gates slowly, allowing the Dragons to open the scoring on a rebound goal by Kenton Levesque at the 15:52. But the Storm started taking control of the game in the second period, and were finally rewarded when a John Girman shot found the inside of the right post behind Dragons goalie Andy Williams at the 10:31 mark.
The Storm took the lead in the third, capitalizing for their first power play goal of the season. Tanner Fritz and Dan Correale moved the puck nicely around the outside, before finding Darren Kramer behind the defence for a tap in goal at the 7:45 mark. The home side continued to dominate a Dragons squad that seemed to be tiring out as the game went on. And when Levesque took a slashing call with 45 seconds left, it looked like the Storm kill the clock with ease. But Girman was given a kneeing call seven seconds later, evening up the man power once again and giving Drumheller a chance to pull their goalie with a face off in the Storm zone. Fritz won the face off for the Storm, but the puck wound up in front of the net somehow, with Robert Geddes banging in the loose puck to tie the game with 32.9 seconds remaining. Overtime was again dominated by the Storm, but they could not find a way to get one by Williams.
The shootout saw Fritz and Correale score for the Storm, while netminder Colin Dzijacky stopped Evan Warner on the final shot to secure the win.
The win improves the Storm's record to 1-1, while the loss drops the Dragons to 0-1-1.

Tonight marks the return of Derek Ginnell to Grande Prairie for the first time since he was traded by the Storm to Nanaimo last October in the Chad Carder deal.

Yeatman, Forfar Suspended

As a result of Grande Prairie player, Nick Yeatman, being assessed an instigator penalty in a second fight, which occurred during a September 10, 2010 game in Grande Prairie, he is suspended for two (2) games. The Grande Prairie Storm are also assessed a team fine.

In addition, Grande Prairie player, Jordan Forfar, is suspended for two (2) games as a result of being assessed a major penalty for checking to the head.
The suspensions are to be served during the Storms' next two (2) regularly scheduled League games.

Crusaders - 2 at Storm - 0

A 33 save performance by Patrick Terriss paced the Sherwood Park Crusaders to a 2-0 win over the Storm in the Storm's 2010-11 season and home opener.

The Crusaders opened the scoring 8:11 into the first period on a power play. Some confusion in the face off led to defenceman Caylen Walls having to take a defensive zone face-off for the Storm. The Crusaders won the face-off and moved the puck around the Storm zone, eventually leading to Jessi Hilton banging home a rebound to make it 1-0. the score would stay that way until the 8:20 mark of the third when, on another power play, Josh Lee's wrister eluded Colin Dzijacky to make it 2-0. The rest got left up to Terriss, who made a few key saves late in the third to preserve the shut out.

The Storm had to do considerable line juggling in the second and third period, after losing a pair of forwards. First, Jordan Forfar was given a five minute checking to the head major and a game misconduct after hitting Crusaders forward Chris Kallal into the boards with what appeared to be a clean hit. However, Kallal hit his head on the boards and stayed on the ice for a couple minutes before being helped off the ice. Then in the third, Dustin Beairsto got involved in a secondary fight with the Crusaders' Andrew Rudzitis, leading to the ejection of both players. However, video review showed that Beairsto's fight was actually the first one in the stoppage, and that defenceman Nick Yeatman's scrap with Eric Liknes was actually the second fight.

While the Storm's work effort was there throughout the contest, the team did lack in a number of areas. The Storm struggled in the face off circle all night, with both Crusaders goals coming directly from face offs. As well, coach Mike Vandekamp felt his team was squeezing the stick a little too tight in the offensive zone.

The Storm and Tim Horton's have announced a unique feature that allows fans to put their support for the Storm where their mouth is.

I chatted with Storm Business Manager Don Moon this morning about the new 'Storm' donut, available game days at all five Tim Horton's locations in Grande Prairie.

The donuts will go on sale for the first time this Friday, when the Storm host the Sherwood Park Crusaders. Here's hoping the new Storm donut is the most popular item at all five Tim Horton's locations in Grande Prairie that day.

Storm release four, add one

The Storm's roster currently sits at 25 players, after four players were let go on Sunday, and one player was added this week.

The goaltending situation is a little less crowded after the club let go of both Kenny Cameron and Simon Thieleman. Both are 17 years old and each have a year of midget eligibility left, although Simon might return to the Junior B team that he played with last year.

Forwards Warren Lothian (United Cycle AAA Midget Maple Leafs) and Brett Grant (St Albert AAA Midget) were also let go, while Dustin Beairsto (a teammate of Grant's in St Albert last season) was added to the roster after being a victim of too many imports in Nanaimo (BCHL) this season. Beairsto, who stands 5 foot 11 and weighs 180 pounds, had 8 goals, 16 points and 84 penalty minutes in 28 games with the Raiders last season. Described as an intense competitor who plays with an edge and an "in your face" style of play, Beairsto sounds like a perfect fit for the Storm's fourth line, along the likes of Daniel Dale, Zack Mungall and Jon Aylward.

The moves leave the Storm with 25 players - 4 goalies, 8 defencemen, and 13 forwards.

AJHL Northern Classic

The AJHL and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons announced details this morning of the first-ever AJHL Northern Classic, which is set for November 26th at MacDonald Island Park in Fort McMurray. It will feature the first junior hockey game to be played outdoors in Canada, as the Oil Barons will face the Drayton Valley Thunder.

I spoke earlier today with Oil Barons president and governor Andrew Boutilier, who is also on the organizing committee for the event. Andrew and I go way back, as he was one of my colour commentators when I did Oil Barons broadcasts several years ago. Here is what he had to say about the event.

Storm Confirm Captains

In a chat with Mike Vandekamp following Saturday's 5-3 win over Quesnel in Dawson Creek, he confirmed three of his four captains for this season. (click on game summary blog to hear that interview).

19 year old Peace River native and third year vet Darren Kramer will serve as captain this season, with fellow vets Caylen Walls and Tanner Fritz serving as two of the three assistants. Vandekamp says he will add a third assistant at some point during the season.

I caught up to the Storm's newest captain after the Quesnel win to get his reaction to the honour.

The Storm closed off their exhibition schedule in Dawson Creek Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 win over the BCHL's Quesnel Millionaires, finishing with a perfect 4-and-0 record.

The Storm opened the scoring almost 13 minutes in on a beautiful give and go play between Jordan Forfar and Dan Correale. After eluding two defenders in the neutral zone, Forfar passed the puck to Correale, who sent it back to the Ontario native. He then eluded two more defenders, and out waited Millionaires goaltender Kirby Halcrow before firing it into the open net to make it 1-0. However, the Mills would even the score late in the period on a marker by Malcolm Gould, one of two for him on the afternoon.

The second period started out great for the Storm, as Tanner Fritz converted a two on one with Correale to give them back the lead. Then back to back power play goals 1:11 apart by Mitch Neumeier and Correale gave the Storm a 4-1 lead. They were threatening to run away with the game.... but it seems three goal leads do not agree with the Storm, at least not in the pre-season.

After the goaltending switch, which saw Lino Chimienti come in for Colin Dzijacky, the Mills struck for two quick ones to make the game interesting. First, Gould would add his second of the day. Then, 1:09 later, a shot from Tyler French deflected off a stick and eluded Chimienti. Suddenly, a 4-1 game had turned to 4-3. The score stayed that way to the end of the second, but the fireworks were just beginning.

First, Storm defenceman Josh Phillips went after Quesnel's Spencer Graboski, who had been flapping his gums at members of the Storm through much of the contest. It landed Phillips an extra two minutes in the sin bin, which the Millionaires were unable to capitalize on.

Then, Millionaires captain and former Drayton Valley Thunder defenceman Skyler Smutek caught Forfar with a knee on knee hit in the neutral zone. As Forfar limped off to the bench under his own power, Smutek got an early taste of the hot water, receiving a five minute kneeing major and a game misconduct. Moments later, Quesnel goalie Charles Corsi picked up a delay of game minor for firing the puck over the glass, giving the Storm a 5 of 3 power play for a full two minutes. but the blue and gold could not capitalize, turning the momentum back over to their BC counterparts.

But Quesnel was unable to seize that opportunity. Instead, they needed a big save from Corsi off of storm forward Jon Aylward to keep it a one goal game. Corsi would soon head to the bench for a sixth attacker, only to see Phillips float the puck the length of the ice to secure a 5-3 Storm lead.

A two goal difference with just under a minute left...... time to turn the fireworks into stupidity. First, Millionaires forward Clayton Chessa landed a hard, high cross check to Storm rookie Mathew Chrystian, earning him a five minute major and a game misconduct. In the same stoppage, Ryan Crosson of the Millionaires jumped another Storm rookie, in midget-aged forward Zack Mungall. While this was going on, Quesnel coach Doug Hedley was verbally berating anyone that was in ear shot, whether it was the officials or members of the Storm.

The verbal diarreha continued to spew from the Millionaires' bench boss well past the end of the game and into the preparation stages for the friendly 5-on-5 shoot out that has been staged at the end of every "Face-Off Fever" contest. Finally, the officials had enough of Hedley's diatribe, and told the Millionaires to go to the dressing room, thus cancelling the shoot out.

HIT OF THE GAME:
Storm veteran defenceman Caylen Walls caught Quesnel's Spencer Graboski with his head down cutting into the Storm zone eearly in the first. While photos appeared to show Walls catching Graboski in the chest, the referee felt differently, handing the Lyalta native a checking to the head minor and an automatic 10 minute misconduct.

NEXT UP:
After a busy week that saw some play five games (including intrasquad game) in seven days, those remaining in Storm camp will take some time to rest and learn systems before embarking on the 2010-11 season Friday night at home against the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

I talked to Storm coach Mike Vandekamp after the game to get his thoughts on the exhibition campaign.

Sometimes, a final score can really flatter a hockey team. That was definitely the case for the BCHL's Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday afternoon.

The Storm badly out-played the Spruce Kings over the first two periods, but a number of squandered scoring chances kept a 2-0 lead from becoming a 4 or 5 goal advantage. The Spruce Kings took advantage of thaat, and two Storm penalties in the final 10 minutes, to even the game and force it to be decided with the shoot out. John Girman had the lone goal in the skills competition, giving the Storm their third win in as many games.

The Storm opened the scoring just 3:41 in, as Dan Correale got his stick on a Ben Woodley point shot. He would add his second of the day 7:39 into the second, as he converted a 2-on-1 opportunity from Jordan Forfar. Correale almost had his third of the game a short time later, only to see the puck slide through his skates as he was facing a wide open net. Then late in the second, Taylor Cote had an open net of his own during a two man advantage, only to be robbed by a diving stick save from Spruce Kings netminder Corey Koop.

That seemed to spark Prince George, who slowly built momentum as the third period moved on. The momentum really accelerated at the 11:07 mark, as Kyle Manlow banged home a power play goal behind Chase Komistek. It was the first goal the Storm had given up while shorthanded during this pre-season, a streak that included 16 straight penalty kills. The Storm would take another penalty a short time later, and the Spruce Kings would again take advantage, as Rjay Berra squibbed a weak shot between Komistek's pads to tie the game.

Komistek would make up for it in the shoot out, stopping all five Spruce Kings shooters, while John Girman continued to hold a hot shooting hand, beating Koop with a backhand in the fourth round of shooters.

Curtis Skip played the first half in goal for the Storm. And while he was not overly tested, he was sharp nonetheless, and continues to make Mike Vandekamp's decision of which of six goalies to keep a very difficult one.

Storm release two, lose one

The Storm lowered their pre-season roster to 28 prior to Friday's contest against the BCHL's Prince George Spruce Kings.

Two defencemen were let go..... local product Scott Nordstrom was sent back to the Ernie's Sports Experts AAA Midget Storm, who are holding tryouts this weekend. And Kitchener, Ontario native Alex Lubczuk was released, and is expected to catch on with a Junior A team in Ontario.
Meanwhile, 16 year old defenceman Kenton Helgeson has left the club to attend camp of the WHL's Calgary Hitmen. Coach Mike Vandekamp says Helgeson could return to the club, if he does not make the defending WHL champs.
Also, forward Tyson Ness has made it through the inagural cuts in Red Deer Rebels WHL camp, and will likely see some pre season action in the coming week.
The moves leave the Storm with 14 forwards and 8 defenceman, which Mike Vandekamp will likely stick with to start the season, barring any trades. Of concern though is that there are still 6 goalies in camp, a number Vandekamp wants to ideally whittle down to 3 for the start of the season.

First off, sorry for no earlier blogging on last night's game. Didn't get home from Dawson Creek until after midnight. That coupled with the 4am alarm call for work meant little time for sleep, and even less time for blogging.

Last night's game certainly had it's share of ebbs and flows. After a power play filled opening 10 minutes, the Storm starting taking the play to the Rage, being rewarded by John Girman's third marker of the pre-season around 11 and a half minutes in. Jordan Forfar picked up the lone assist. Then about 4 minutes later, Tanner Fritz beat Jack Surgenor to make it 2-0. And on a power play just over a minute later, Darren Kramer banged home a loose puck in front of the net to make it 3-0, and had some in attendance thinking that the Storm might run away with this one.
However, nobody told the hometown Rage that!
They proceeded to rip off four straight to take the lead. Tyson McCallum and Jason Wark both beat Kenny Cameron late in the first to make it 3-2 going into the dressing room. And then Wark and Jon Johanesson slid the puck by Simon Thieleman after the goalie change halfway through the second. Suddenly, a 3-0 lead had turned into a 4-3 deficit for the Storm. To their credit though, the players wearing the Blue and Gold last night did not roll over, choosing instead to battle back. Mathew Chrystian did a great job to keep a clearing attempt in at the point. He then proceeded to fire a low shot that was tipped in by Girman for his second of the night late in the second.
The third started a little tentatively for both sides, with the Storm eventually picking up the play and getting the go-ahead and eventual game winning goal from Forfar nine and a half minutes in. Forfar did a great job of out waiting Rage netminder Andrew Walsh before lifting the puck into the net. He almost got a second goal a few minutes later on a Storm power play, only to ring the puck off the goal post.
Two scraps ended the noteworthy points of the night, as Kramer drops the mitts for the second straight night, this time going with Tyler Wakefield. Then after the final buzzer, Carter Page, who had been trying to goat Forfar into a fight throughout the final minute of the game, decided to jump the Storm forward just to the side of the penalty box.
Random observations......
Storm were not as physical last night as they were in their 4-1 win over the Rage on Tuesday night. Coach Mike Vandekamp attributed that to fatigue on the part of their forwards, many of whom were playing their third game in four days (if you count Sunday's intrasquad affair). With only 14 forwards in camp, and injuries developing among some of those players, many of the forwards have had to play in all pre season action so far. Today's day off from game action could not have come at a better time.

Quite the battle for fourth line duty on the Storm this year. Three spots appear to be up for grabs among five players..... Daniel Dale, Zack Mungall, Brett Grant, Warren Lothian and Jon Aylward. Jon is the only one who has yet to see action in the pre season, while the other four have certainly not done anything yet to play themselves off the team. That will be something to keep an eye on during the games in Dawson Creek this weekend against Prince George and Quesnel.

Storm are now 12 for 12 on penalty kill in the pre-season, after going a perfect 8 for 8 last night. And their powerplay is now 2/10 after last night's 1/8 performance.

What a pre-season so far for the Girman/Forfar/Kramer line. They combined for 7 goals and 18 points in the two games against Dawson Creek (Girman 4G 3A, Forfar 2G 4A, Kramer 1G 4A). And they do it without being overly flashy.... just solid hard work down low.... the epitome of how coach Vandekamp wants his club to look this season.

The hockey world truly is a small one. While at the game last night, I bumped into an old friend of mine from my broadcasting days in Manitoba. Jeff Wiest was coach and GM of the Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League from 1999 to 2001. I was the Stampeders first play by play broadcaster at that time. My fondest memories are of the Stamps going into the Opaskwayak Cree Nation near The Pas to play the Blizzard. The fans there would ride him, chanting "Psycho Wiest" the entire night. Jeff just loved it! He also coached in Winkler, where he won an MJHL championship, and in Dauphin. He's now working for Louisiana Pacific in Dawson Creek, and is out of the coaching business. But a great guy and super character!

The line of John Girman, Jordan Forfar and Darren Kramer combined for nine points as the Storm opened their exhibition schedule with a 4-1 win over the North American Hockey League's Dawson Creek Rage on Tuesday night at the Canada Games Arena.

Girman, who spent last season with the Georgetown Raiders, had two goals and an assist, while Forfar, who was picked up from the Huntsville Otters, added a goal and two assists. Linemate Darren Kramer, who was wearing the captain's 'C' on the night, had three assists before dropping the mitts with the Rage's Kevin Swales in the last minute.

Kramer and Swales landed some bombs in their tilt.

Spencer Mault had the other goal for the Storm, as he looked very comfortable on a line with veterans Tanner Fritz and Dan Correale. The trio moved the puck well and had several glorious chances, but were unable to convert more than the one time that they did.

Former Storm Blaine Bokenfohr, who spent the past two seasons with the Blue and Gold before being picked up by the Rage in the off season, had the lone goal for Dawson Creek. Although it won't officially be known as such, the marker was, in essence, the first ever goal in the history of the expansion franchise.

Not only did the Storm win the game, but they also took the shoot-out after the game, as all pre season action will have mandatory shoot-outs to get teams ready for it's implementation this season. Tanner Fritz and Jordan Forfar both scored, while Colin Dzijacky made a pair of saves.

Sitting out tonight were Nick Yeatman, Josh Phillips, Landon Hall, Brett Grant, Jon Aylward, Matthew Chrystian, and Kenton Helgeson, along with netminders Kenny Cameron, Chase Komistek, Curtis Skip and Simon Thieleman. The skaters and two of those four goalies will all draw into the lineup tomorrow night when the two teams face-off at the Encana Events Center in Dawson Creek. It will be an 8pm Alberta time face off.

Tanner Fritz beats Colin Dzijacky for lone shoot out goal

Tanner Fritz scored the tying goal with just over a minute remaining in the third, and then had the lone goal in the shoot out, as team Blue came from behind to beat team White 3-2 in the Storm's annual intrasquad game.

After a scoreless first half of the hockey game, team Blue opened the scoring when veteran Dan Correale stole the puck in the neutral zone and broke in on Kenny Cameron, beating him five hole. But team White then scored twice within a 2:20 span to take the lead into the dressing room. First, John Girman converted a Jordan Forfar pass. That was followed by a 35 foot wrister from Derian Cardinal that eluded team Blue netminder Christopher Wray, giving team White their only lead of the day.

That lead help up until the 18:18 mark of the third period, when Tanner Fritz defelected a Ben Woodley shot behind Colin Dzijacky to tie the game.

Instead of playing overtime, the game was decided by a shoot out, which is being re-introduced to the AJHL this season. Team Blue goalie Curtis Skip stopeed all three shooters he faced, while Fritz went five hole on Dzijacky to give Blue the victory.

After the game, coach Mike Vandekamp and his staff reduced the camp roster from 40 to 31 players (14 forwards, 11 defencemen, 6 goalies). Not a bad number to have considering the Storm play four games in five days this week. The pre season schedule begins with a home and home against the North American Hockey League's newest franchise, the Dawson Creek Rage. The two teams face off Tuesday night at 7 at the Canada Games Arena, before hitting the ice again the following night at the Encana Events Center in Dawson Creek. Puck drop for that one is 8pm Alberta time.

Storm Training Camp - Day 3 Evening scrimmage

The final scrimmage before Sunday's Blue-White Intrasquad game saw team Blue pick up a 4-2 win over team Gold. Four year veteran Tanner Fritz recorded a hat trick for the Blue team, with Brett Grant adding the other goal. Mitch Neumeier and Scott Nordstrom replied for the Gold team. Saturday night's game was by far the most spirited and intense scrimmage of the weekend, as both teams ramped up their physical play. Also of note, the entire game was played 4 on 4.

Players that stood out:
Team Gold:
- Lino Chimienti - May have allowed the most goals among the three Gold netminders (2 in his 20 minutes of work), but he also made some very big stops late in the contest to keep it a one goal game. His best stop was diving across to rob John Girman on a two on one.
- Taylor Cote - Continues to be one of the top forwards in camp. Not bad for a guy who is still a few months away from his 17th birthday. A big reason for that is his consistent physical play.
- Jordan Forfar - Puck seems to follow him whenever he is on the ice. Also not afraid to play physical.
- Mitch Neumeier - The second year vet is having a much stronger camp than he did last year. His goal tonight.... a wrister from the faceoff circle that found a spot under the cross bar behind Kenny Cameron... was a beauty.

Team Blue:
- Tanner Fritz - What more can be said about a guy who scored three times. He played like the Tanner Fritz that Storm fans have come used to over the past three seasons. Great hand-eye coordination to bat his hat trick goal out of mid air to make it a 4-2 game.
- Dan Correale - Continues to play with tons of confidence with the puck. Set up Fritz's opening goal by splitting the defecne, regaining the puck, and finding Tanner alone in front.
- Daniel Dale - Nothing flashy, but is a very smart player that makes few if any mistakes.
- Caylen Walls - Set the physical tone by riding Mitch Neumeier hard into the goal early in the contest. Also showed a lot of confidence in moving the puck, something we didn't see alot of last season.
- Brett Grant - A nice rush on the third goal ended with a hard move to the net, and good patience to out wait Chimienti.

Veteran Kyle Bowen scored twice and added two assists for the Bobcats, while Steve Dobbin, James Shaw, Jeremie Perron, Jadred Cambieto and Cooper Limb added singles. Kory Chisholm added three assists for the Bobcats, who improved to 2-1 in the pre season. Matt Koebel had the lone goal for the Oil Barons, who suffered their first loss of the pre season (2-1).

St Albert Steel - 6 Spruce Grove Saints - 4
In Sherwood Park, Jeremy Olenyk scored twice to lead the Steel attack. Ryan Berlin, Spencer Pommells, Topher Flanagan and Cullen Menuse (?? hard to read his name on game sheet) also scored for the Steel, while Wesley Warkentin, Keith Summers, David Glen and Troy ??? (again hard to read name on game sheet) replied for the Saints. It was the first pre season game for both teams.

Drayton Valley Thunder -4 Sherwood Park Crusaders - 3 (Shoot out)
The AJHL is holding a shoot out after every pre-season game, no matter what the final score is, in order to get everyone ready for it's implementation during the regular season. But in Sherwood Park, the shoot out was actually needed to determine the winner between the Thunder and Crusaders. Eric Sieben and Jordan Fimmonds scored for Drayton Valley in the shoot out, while Zach Wiessbach stopped both Sherwood Park shooters he faced. During the game, Sieben, Codey Hansen and Jared Haupeman scored for the Thunder, while Eric Liknes with 2 and Nolan Yaremchuk replied for the Crusaders.

Calgary Canucks - 5 Okotoks Oilers - 2
Grande Prairie native Matt Chomyc scored twice for the Canucks, with singles added by Zack Wildman, Ben Primeau and Taylor Graham. Brandy Weldon and Houston Hazellar replied for the Oilers. It was the pre season opener for both teams.

Storm Training Camp - Day 2 Notes

The first scrimmage of camp highlighted day 2 of Storm training camp, as team Blue beat team Gold 4-2.

Local product Zack Mungall scored twice to lead the way for team Blue. He was able to get a pair of wrist shots off quickly, the first one surprising Gold netminder Chase Komistek, who was caught a little deep in his net at the time. John Girman and Jeff Clark had the other goals for team Blue, while Jon Aylward and Taylor Cote replied for team Gold.

The game had a good pace early on, but slowed as it progressed. Some of that could possibly be attributed to a lack of physical play as the game went on. I felt Taylor Cote and Cam McWilliam did a good job of playing physical throughout the game, something they will need to do a consistent basis throughout the season in order to be effective. But after that, physical play was inconsistent at best the rest of the night. Something I'm sure Mike Vandekamp will address with his troops during the day on Saturday, leading up to the second scrimmage on Saturday night.

Players that stood out:
- Taylor Cote - had a nose for the net all night, which eventually led to his scoring the Gold's second marker of the night. As mentioned earlier, he was a physical presence all night as well.
- Zack Mungall - two quick releases that wound up in the back of the net. Will need to continue to do that to earn a spot on this year's club.
- Dan Correale - Looked very confident with the puck all night. Solid play along the boards with the puck all night. Great drive to the net and nice presence to find John Girman at the side of the net set up the game's first goal.
- Jordan Forfar - This guy has skill, and is willing to play physical as well. Just needs to be consistent.

Storm Training Camp - Day 1 Notes

Training camp kicked off this morning with fitness testing, and then a team bonding exercise (in the rain) at Saskatoon Lake. Some observations.....

All the veterans have come to camp in great shape and ready to go. In particular, defenceman Caylen Walls (Lyalta, AB) has put on about 15-20 pounds of muscle over the summer. He was a physical force last season as a rookie. Imagine what he will be like this year. However, looked like he might have injured his back during testing this morning. We'll have to see how that affects him when on-ice sessions start tomorrow.

Third year vet Darren Kramer (Peace River, AB) was here for physical testing, but told me he has not yet decided if he will be on the ice here tomorrow, or in Edmonton when the WHL's Oil Kings open up their training camp. Kramer was a 10th round pick of the Oil Kings in the 2009 WHL Draft. Personally, I think he will be here. Darren has the chance to be a big part of this team this year, both offensively and as a leader on this club. Do you risk that for what would like be a 4th line position (if even that) in the WHL?

Fellow veteran Tyson Ness (Grande Prairie) is not here this weekend, as he is attending Red Deer Rebels WHL camp. Meanwhile, fellow vet Josh Juell (Bonanza, AB), is also not on the ice this weekend. He had more surgical work on his shoulders over the summer, and is expected to be off the ice until October or November at the earliest. Here's to a speedy recovery, Josh.

A total of 40 players will be in camp, including 7 goaltenders. Could be interesting to see how they work that during the scrimmages on Friday and Saturday night.

Saw defenceman Ben Woodley for the first time today. Simply put, he is BIG! (6 foot 7 big to be exact!)

Storm, Canadian Tire Partner Up On Kidz Fan Club

The Storm have signed a three year agreement with Canadian Tire, who will become the exclusive sponsor of the Storm Kidz Fan Club.

The club, which is free of charge and open to children 12 years of age and under, include a number of benefits for members. including:

- A dressing room visit during the season.
- A private skate with the team
- A membership card that can be used to purchase a child`s game ticket for half price ($3.50 instead of $7 regular price).
- Discounts on souvenirs at the Storm Store during games, or at Ernie`s Sports Experts.
- Several cool features if you celebrate your birthday at a Storm home game, including introduction on the big screen at the game, a special `Storm Kidz` puck autographed by the team, and $3.50 tickets for as many child-aged friends as you wish to bring.

The club will also hold a monthly draw among Canadian Tire Storm Kidz Fan Club members, with the winner receiving a special prize from Canadian Tire, which will be presented to them at center ice at a Storm Game.

A special Canadian Tire Storm Kidz Fan Club page will also be unveiled on the Storm`s website during the season.

Families can register their child for the Canadian Tire Storm Kidz Fan Club at the special Storm-Edmonton Oilers Ice Breaker event planned for Saturday from 12 to 4 at the parking lot of the Crystal Center. They can also register at the Storm office in the Canada Games Arena, or by calling 780-538-4919.

On a side note, Canadian Tire will also sponsor this year`s Storm hockey card set. Those will be released a few months into the season. (Note to business manager Don Moon.... I think a Jeff Henson hockey card would be a great addition to this year`s set, and could be a collector`s item down the road.)

Training Camp Ice Times

It's almost here.

Storm training camp kicks off tomorrow (Thursday) morning with registration at 9:30, and fitness testing beginning at 10:30. The close to 40 players in camp will spend Thursday afternoon at a team building event and barbecue, before hitting the ice for the first time on Friday morning.

All on-ice sessions will take place at the Canada Games Arena in the Crystal Center.

The best battle could be among the eight netminders expected in camp, who will battle it out for two spots. Coach Mike Vandekamp admitted to me that there will be some experienced netminders in camp, who the club decided to keep their acquisitions "close to the chest" until camp starts. I for one am anxious to see who they are bringing in.

Also, 19 year old Tanner Fritz has decided to hold off going to Ohio State for a year, and will be back for a fourth season with the Storm. He and fellow veteran Dan Correale showed some good chemistry for most of last season, and it will be interesting to see if Vandekamp keeps them together this season, or decides to split them up with hopes of spreading out the offence.

Oilers 'Fanboni' Coming To Grande Prairie This Weekend

To parody a song by the Gear Daddies.. "I Wanna Drive the 'Fanboni!"

The Storm are joining forces with the Edmonton Oilers for a special icebreaker event this Saturday.

In conjunction with the Storm's training camp, the Oilers are bringing their travelling event team to the front parking lot and lobby of the Crystal Centre between noon and 4.

The 53 foot big-rig will include a complete road hockey setup, merchandise and promotional material. Even the very popular "Fanboni" (pictured above), which is a zamboni converted to provide rides and photo opportunities, is coming along for the trip.

"Fans across Oil Country are gearing up for the start of the 2010-11 season and what better way for the Oilers to join that momentum then take part in Grande Prairie’s festivities this weekend," said Oilers President and CEO Patrick LaForge in a news release. "Northern Alberta has a rich diversity of hockey programs that span all levels and ages, this weekend will be about celebrating the game of hockey from grassroots to the pros."

The Storm will also use the event to launch some special activities planned for their 15th season in the AJHL. Some of those activities to be featured are the Canadian Tire Storm Kids Club, the Storm Booster Club, and incentive packages and giveaways for season ticket purchasers.

Should be a lot of fun. Hope to see a lot of you there. (Now I just have to figure out who I need to talk to about possibly taking the Fanboni for a lap or two around the ice of the Canada Games Arena.)

The Alberta Junior Hockey League today launched a new website and mobile site, which are now live for all fans to enjoy. The League has also introduced Twitter and Facebook pages to allow ultimate access and interaction with the AJHL.

Familiar Faces On other Side in Pre Season

The Storm could see some familiar faces during their upcoming pre season schedule.

The Dawson Creek Rage, the newest and only Canadian franchise in the North American Hockey League, purchased the rights to former Storm forward Blaine Bokenfohr during the summer. I talked to Rage coach/GM Scott Robinson (also known as the dad of former another former Storm in Brooks Robinson) a few weeks ago, and he sees the St Albert native as exactly what they are looking for in a 20 year old this season. I also caught up with 'Bokes' a few weeks ago, and he's very excited about the prospects of concluding his junior career with the Rage. The Storm host the Rage on Tuesday, August 31st at 7pm at the Canada Games Arena, and then head to the Encana Events Center in Dawson Creek for a return match-up the following evening. That will be an 8pm Alberta time start.

Then over the September long weekend, the Storm return to Dawson Creek for the second edition of Face Off Fever. Their second game, on Saturday, September 4th, will be against the Quesnel Millionaires, and possibly former Storm defenceman Cody Stackaruk. The 19 year old Edmonton native was traded to the Mills in the off season as the future considerations from last summer's trade that brought Taylor Rovatti to the Storm. I say 'possibly' because I have heard conflicting reports as to whether or not 'Stacks' will in fact be reporting to Quesnel. It basically depends on who you talk to, and what they have heard. We'll keep our eye on this and see what happens.

One face the Storm will not see on the Quesnel side is Glen Watson. He is back working here in Grande Prairie after stepping down over the summer as coach and replacing himself with Doug Hedley, who was hired earlier this summer as coach of the Olds Grizzlys, before stepping down just weeks later. Glen is still GM of the Millionaires for the time being, but is expected to officially step aside from that job at the end of next month.

Business Manager Don Moon wants you!

The Storm are expanding their season ticket sales staff by...oh say.... a thousand people.

The club has introduced a program that can put money in the pockets of season ticket holders, while putting more people into the Canada Games Arena.

Basically, it works off the premise of that old commercial where "I told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on, and so on, and..." well, you get the point.

Season ticket holders are encouraged to try and recruit new seat holders for the coming season. Talk to your friends, talk to your family. Heck, even talk to your freind's family. Then, if you think you have someone convinced to become a new Storm season ticket holder, email their name to Storm Business Manager Don Moon at gpstorm@persona.ca, or call 780-538-4919. If that person does buy a season ticket, and tells the Storm in a follow up phone call that you were the person who convinced them to buy the tickets..... a "finders fee" cheque for 50 dollars will be headed in your direction.

Recruit six people this way, and you could basically recoup the cost of your own season seat.

The only catches are that your recruit must not have had season tickets for the Storm before. And, they must purchase their seat and be paid up in full between now and the Storm's home opener on September 10th against Sherwood Park.

"Season ticket holders are normally pretty passionate about Storm Hockey and the best sellers we have out there in the community." according to Moon. "The last thing we want to do is get complacent and think people are just going to continually show up at our door. You always have to keep trying new thing to attract new customers. Once we get them they usually stick around for a long time, but you sometimes have to be creative to get them in the door that first time."

So Storm season ticket holders, consider this your call to action!

Storm Unveil 15th Anniversary Logo

This season marks a pair of 15th anniversaries surrounding the Grande Prairie Storm. And the team is planning to celebrate that anniversary in several ways.

It was 1995 when a group of community minded individuals took over control of the financially troubled Grande Prairie Chiefs. After retiring the club's debt, the team became known as the Storm.

The rest, as they say, is history.

After one season in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League, during which the team claimed the league's championsip, the Storm were accepted into the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Since then, they have won two AJHL championships, and have hosted the most successful RBC Cup tournament in the event's history.

The Storm will embark on their 15th season in the AJHL on Friday, September 10th, when they host the Sherwood Park Crusaders. And a number of special activities are being planned to celebrate the milestone.

First off was the unveiling of the anniversary logo, created by Nine 10 Website & Brand Stylists (the creators of the special pink jerseys for the annual Shoot For A Cure fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society).

There will special activities recognizing season ticket holders, volunteers, and sponsors who have all been with the club since 1995. The team will also hold a special draw for anyone born on September 15th, 1995 (the date of the Storm's inagural regular season game), with a family pack of season tickets being the grand prize. As well, anyone celebrating their 15th birthday on the day of a Storm home game will be treated by the club to a birthday party that includes 15 tickets for family and friends, and an introduction during the game itself.

Plans are also in the works for a 15-puck on-ice shootout, which will be held several times during the season. An ultimate winner will be determine, with that person driving home behind the wheel of a new vehicle.

I've even heard rumours of a special 15th anniversary third jersey, that will apparently be worn during weeknight home games, and then auctioned off at the end of the season. Nothing has been confirmed yet, so keep an eye out here or at http://www.gpstorm.com/

AJHL, Four Other Leagues, Launch Pilot Project to Reduce Violence and Bullying

A group of five Member Leagues within the Canadian Junior Hockey League are proud to announce an unprecedented joint effort to eliminate violence and bullying from Junior A hockey.

This initiative has developed from a partnership between the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), and Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL), who have formed together to create the Junior A Supplement, which will be launched as a pilot project in the 2010-2011 CJHL Season.

The Junior A Supplement has been created to protect junior-aged hockey players by addressing actions such as Blows to the Head, Dangerous Hits, Accumulated Major Penalties, Accumulated Misconducts, Instigating and Unnecessary Fighting. The supplement increases team, coach and player accountability through the tracking of repeat offenders, increased suspensions and significant financial penalties. It builds on the progressive regulations undertaken over the past decade by the participating Leagues and Branches to reduce bullying and violence from Junior A Hockey in Canada.

The pilot project was developed as a response to the implementation of Hockey Canada Regulation 6.7, which calls for an automatic game misconduct whenever a major penalty for fighting is assessed. The participating Member Leagues have gone one step further by targeting the types of dangerous plays that often result in fights and other types of violence. The Leagues within the pilot project will not be subject to Hockey Canada Regulation 6.7, which will be implemented across the remainder of the Leagues in CJHL.

Personally, I think this is a great move on several fronts. First, bringing back the one fight rule would, in my opinion, be detrimental to the game. Not only would you see an increase in 'star' players being targeted, but stick work would also increase, with very little accountability.

This document also looks at other serious issues currently in the game, such as checking from behind, hits to the head, clipping, and staged fights. All of these should be reduced with the introduction of this pilot project, and the subsequent penalties that are detailed for these actions.

Here we go again!

Another Grande Prairie Storm season is upon, and with that comes another attempt by myself to blog the news and events surrounding the hockey club throughout the season.

This will be my third attempt at doing this. The first time came part way through the 2008-09 season, and lasted about a month before I lost interest. Last year's efforts lasted only a few posts in the pre season, before I was convinced by one of my broadcasting counterparts to join efforts with him in a league wide blog.

This year, I'm going back on my own and ramping up efforts (at least that's the plan right now. hehe) I hope to add audio and video ssegments to the blog this year, along with keeping you updated on the latest happenings with the Storm. I also hope to add updates throughout the season on Grande Peace Athletic Club teams, as well as the Grande Prairie A's senior team.

So welcome aboard, and I hope you will visit often during the season.
