Storm Confirm Captains

In a chat with Mike Vandekamp following Saturday's 5-3 win over Quesnel in Dawson Creek, he confirmed three of his four captains for this season.  (click on game summary blog to hear that interview).

19 year old Peace River native and third year vet Darren Kramer will serve as captain this season, with fellow vets Caylen Walls and Tanner Fritz serving as two of the three assistants.  Vandekamp says he will add a third assistant at some point during the season.

I caught up to the Storm's newest captain after the Quesnel win to get his reaction to the honour.

  1. We're they just wearing temp/unconfirmed letters for the game in GP?

I was taking notes during the game and had those 3 with the same captaincy letters, but also Correale wore an 'A' during the game. I kind of figured one of the 3 assistants might be rotating home/road games though.

Random question I meant to ask for the heck of it before Jeff, regarding Jordan Forfar... did the Storm just luck out on a gem like him while trading Mitch Jones' rights, or was he just kind of given up on after his point/game season with Peterborough? Seems bizarre that he'd be traded out of Ontario, with the skill he has.

  2. Jayrox -

Kramer has had the C for all 4 exhibition games.

Forfar was interested in coming west to earn a scholarship and have a chance to win. Mike scouted Jordan prior to trading for him, and obviously liked what he saw. Some teams trade players away because they are looking to go in a different direction, or the player wants to be moved. I would highly doubt anyone has "given up on" Jordan. There is a lot of exposure to the NCAA here in the AJHL and Grande Prairie is becoming a desirable destination for Junior A hockey players.

  3. I spoke with Jordan today and ThePerfectStorm is correct..... he wanted to come out west to have a better shot of getting seen and earning a U-S college scholarship. Mike Vandekamp saw him at a junior tournament in Boston last spring, and the negotiations began there. It wasn't at all a case of his former team in Ontario giving up on him. He wanted to move and they were willing to accomodate him.

  4. Yeah, I figured Darren would have worn the C in the DC games.. but I mean, I almost didn't think they'd be wearing them for certain before there was any official mentioning of it hey.

Thanks for the intel on Forfar guys! It definitely makes sense, and sure nice the Storm have him.
